Uzbekistan, UN mull situation in Afghanistan, around Aral Sea

On Nov. 21, 2018, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Director General of the UN Office at Geneva, Michael Möller, Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

The sides discussed prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN, as well as topical issues of the international and regional agenda.

Special attention was paid to combining the efforts of the world community to mitigate the consequences of the Aral Sea ecological disaster, including through the implementation of socio-economic and humanitarian programs and projects in the Aral Sea region.

The parties also considered issues of comprehensive assistance to the political settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, which is a key factor in ensuring peace and stability in the region and far beyond its borders.

Möller expressed UN's full support to the efforts of Uzbekistan to strengthen trust, good neighborly relations and constructive partnership in Central Asia, as well as to promote sustainable development in the region.

The UN confirmed readiness to deepen the multi-faceted cooperation with Uzbekistan, including within the framework of the implementation of the results of the first Asian Forum on Human Rights, held in Uzbekistan in the 17th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
