Doha: The World Chess Federation (FIDE) yesterday elected President of Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al Modaihki as Executive Director for International Relations of FIDE, on the sidelines of the World Chess Championships in London.

Al Modaihki said that the FIDE Executive Office, at its meeting in London, distributed the tasks to the new members and formed the special committees, adding that he was appointed to the position which represents a great gain for Qatar Chess and Qatari Sports.

Al Modaihki noted many future goals, saying that he looks forward to include the chess game in the Olympic games again by listing it in the 2019 African Games in Morocco, as well as the Asian Games. He explained that chess was present in the Olympics from 2003 to 2015, and that Qatar was the first to include chess in the Asian Games when it hosted the event in 2006.

He said that discussions are currently under way with the Olympic Council of Asia and the Ministry of Sports of China for this purpose, adding that a special file will be prepared to list the game in the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar.

Al Modaihki also announced that he was appointed as the representative of the World Chess Federation to the World Mind Sports Games, to be held in China in April, and to the 2020 World University Championships.
