Taliban confirm meeting US envoy in Qatar

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): The Taliban on Monday confirmed that their representatives held three consecutive meetings with US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

In a statement, the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, said their senior representatives met Khalilzad on the 14th, 15th and 16th November to find a peaceful solution to conflict in Afghanistan.

The talks were preliminary and no agreement was reached on any issues yet. The Taliban representatives discussed the current situation of Afghanistan, insisted on the establishment of an Islamic government and finding a true solution to the problems in the country, the statement said.

Mujahid rejected reports about the agreement of interim government, future president or election and termed them as baseless rumors.

The statement quoted Mujahid as saying: €œThe propaganda spread by media outlets about an interim government, future president or election, or rumors spread by anonymous circles and individuals or predications by some analysts are all baseless and hold no truth.

The statement revealed that such sources and figures were deliberately trying to spark worry and uncertainty. The Taliban would never agree to anything that did not adhere to Islamic principles, policy of the movement, the source informed.

Last month, Khalilzad had met Taliban representatives in Qatar and discussed peace process.

On Sunday, the US special envoy to Afghanistan Khalilzad during a press conference in Kabul, hoped a peace deal would be reached with Taliban insurgents before presidential election on April 20.

Khalilzad may visit Pakistan and Russia as part of his efforts for Afghan peace.
