New Maldives President takes oaths


(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) New Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took oaths at a ceremony held in the Maldives capital Male' today.

Speaking at the ceremony after taking oaths, Solih said that he will strengthen bilateral relations with India and other neighboring countries and will work to ensure stability in the Indian Ocean.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and delegates from China and several other countries attended the event.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry said that high level dignitaries from forty six countries were expected to attend the ceremony at the National Stadium in Male' today.

Among those who were to attend the event were Luo Shugang, Minister of Culture and Tourism as Special Envoy of the President of China, Wataru Takeshita, Member of House of Representatives of Japan as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan, Mounia Boucetta, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as Special Envoy of the King of Morocco, Jean-Christophe Belliard, Deputy Secretary-General of the European Union External Action Service, Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Amjad Hussain B. Sial, Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

In addition, several Ambassadors, senior government officials and business leaders from different countries were expected to attend the ceremony.

During their visit, several dignitaries were to paying Courtesy Calls on the President and are expected to attend an Official Reception, to be held in Kurumba Maldives. (Colombo Gazette)
