(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate Nasser Abu Baker was hit by a teargas canister on Saturday when Israeli forces fired teargas at a nonviolent march organized by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) at Qalandia checkpoint, on the Ramallah-Jerusalem road.
The soldiers attacked the march that included international and Palestinian journalists protesting Israels violations against journalists in the occupied Palestinian territories the minute it arrived at the checkpoint. Abu Baker, who was hit in the shoulder, and others who suffocated from gas inhalation were treated at the location, Palestinian WAFA news agency reported.
"The Israeli war criminals must be held accountable for their crimes against journalists," said Abu Baker. 'This attack against international and Palestinian journalists today confirms that the occupying state targets journalists and does not care for the basic ethics in dealing with journalists."
Meanwhile, president of the IFJ, Philippe Leruth, who also took part in the march, condemned the Israeli forces attack on the journalists, saying this "proves that Israels democracy is fake."
He said that "the Palestinian journalists are not terrorists as Israel claims but they are journalists who should be respected and not attacked."
The IFJ was in Ramallah to attend a conference on Palestinian journalists in the line of fire. (QNA)
