Qatar- 50 healthcare professionals attend WHO workshop

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) As part of Doha Healthcare Week, a seven-day community festival created by the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) that took place during the week leading up to the WISH 2018 global healthcare conference, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)'s Tobacco Control Center organised a training session on tobacco dependence treatment.
According to Dr Ahmad al-Mulla, head of the HMC Tobacco Control Center, around 50 local and regionally based healthcare professionals, including physicians, psychologists, nurses, midwives, wellness health coaches, and others who work in the healthcare field, attended the session.
He added that the attendees represented private and public healthcare facilities, military and a number of health institutions in the EMRO and AFRO regions of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
'The workshop aimed to add knowledge, skills and enhance the ability of participants to provide care to tobacco-dependent patients, said Dr al-Mulla.
The participants were trained to deliver tobacco interventions and train others to do the same. The workshop included best practices of novel clinical care, using proven modes of treatment with hands-on activity, practice sheets, role-playing and exercises, according to a press statement.
The workshop featured both local and international speakers, including Dr al-Mulla; Dr Douglas William Bettcher, former director for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases at WHO; Dr Dongbo Fu, medical officer for Tobacco Cessation at WHO, and Dr Feras Hawari, director, Cancer Control Office and chief, Pulmonary and Critical Care at King Hussein Cancer Center.
In recent years, HMC's Tobacco Control Centre has organised a number of training sessions on tobacco dependence treatment.
The Tobacco Control Center is a WHO collaborating centre - the first in Qatar. The ‘Train-the-Trainers Workshop on Treating Tobacco Dependence' was held on November 11 and 12 at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
