Academics: Kuwait state media professionally covered weather crisis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Mervat Abdul-Dayem KUWAIT, Nov 17 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Ministry of Information has taken strides on path of modernizing technology and methods, and coverage of the latest weather crisis proved it possessed effective technology, skilled and professional staff, according to academics The professional and up-to-date means of news coverage, namely the latest bout of downpour that prompted collective efforts by competent authorities, has drawn the academics' acclaim.
They have admired state-of-art technology, particularly employed by Kuwait Television, covering the situation throughout the country live despite the difficult conditions and the stormy weather.
Moreover, they have heaped praise upon the national media personnel who kept their cameras on, keeping the people abreast of the unsteady weather conditions, braving gusty winds, thunderous rainfalls and raging flow of rain water that swamped the public places.
Ahmad Al-Kandari, professor of information and public relations at Kuwait University, underscored in remarks to KUNA role of the official media in covering the recent weather events and guiding the public how to cope with the extraordinary situation.
It had been observed, he said, citizens and expatriates depended on the official news resources due to wide-spread rumors and fake news via the other means.
Kuwait witnessed heavy rainfalls early this week -- reportedly the heaviest on record since 50 years ago. The deluge swamped several roads, intersections and public locations. Personnel of all state sectors were on full alert to cope with its ramifications.
Elaborating, Al-Kandari indicated that the official media, namely the Ministry of Information and Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) had played an effective role during the crisis. Staff, despite the stressful conditions, proved to be up to the challenge and ensured that the people of Kuwait remain informed about the weather conditions.
The switch to the official and KUNA had been noticed in the large number of people following on their newscasts -- in addition to their social media posts.
The Kuwaiti official media, said Dr. Khaled Al-Qahs, a KU media professor, had proven that it remained more credible, as compared to the social media that were abuzz with false reports and rumors.
He expressed hope that the MoI would pursue such an approach in news coverage in the future, lauding the cadres who were present on the fields to cover the news first hand.
Meanwhile, Dr. Fawaz Al-Ajmi, who also teaches information at the university, said he had noticed the tremendous efforts by the government authorities over the past days, proving that they were fully prepared to cope with emergencies.
He underscored the extraordinary efforts by the media staff, a role that inspired assurance to the nationals and residents of the country.
The MoI proved that it was up to the challenges of shouldering the responsibilities, proving that it possessed substantial human and technological resources.
Moreover, he credited in particular the Minister of Information, Minister of State for Youth Affairs Mohammad Al-Jabri, the undersecretaries and the assistants at the department. (end) mrf.rk
