As the successor to last year's mid-range Aquos R Compact, Japan-based Sharp has introduced the Aquos R2 Compact.

The phone features two notches to offer an improved design and more screen area than its predecessor.

Moreover, the R2 comes with high-end internals including a Snapdragon 845 chipset and is slated to release in Japan next year.

Up front, the R2 features two display cutouts - a U-shaped Essential phone-like notch on the top to house the camera and a slightly wider cut-out at the bottom to enclose the fingerprint scanner.

Further, there's an aluminum frame and a built quality that provides some dust and water resistance.

The R2 features a 5.2-inch full-HD+ (1080x2280 pixels) display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

In the camera department, the R2 Compact sports a single 22.6-megapixel rear camera with high-speed autofocus, an f/1.9 aperture, OIS and electronic handshake correction for smoother videos. Up front, the phone gets an 8-megapixel selfie snapper with an f/2.2 aperture and supports face unlock technology.

The R2 Compact is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage (expandable up to 512GB).

It packs a 2,500mAh battery and runs Android 9 Pie.

Further, in terms of connectivity options, the R2 supports 4G VoLTE, GPS, GLONASS, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and USB Type-C port.

Currently, Sharp has not disclosed the pricing details of the phone. However, we'll know all the details when the company releases Aquos R2 Compact in Japan next year. That said, the phone's availability in other markets still remains unknown.
