Senior diplomat: Geneva discussions on Caucasus due in December

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) The Geneva International Discussions, the only platform for dialogue between Georgia and its former republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, will be held on December 10-11, TASS reports referring to the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin.

"A regular meeting within the framework of the Geneva discussions is due to take place on December 10-11," he said.

According to the Russian diplomat, one of the key issues to be discussed in Geneva will be the resumption of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) "which has been unable to convene for months due to a harsh confrontational stance expressed by the Georgian side."

Karasin added that co-chairmen of the Geneva discussions will visit the region soon and travel to Moscow afterwards.

The Geneva Discussions on security and stability in the South Caucasus are the only platform for dialogue between Georgia and the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. They are held under the collective chairmanship of the UN, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) with participation of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Georgia, Russia and the United States.

The Geneva Discussions were held upon agreements reached by the Russian and French presidents after tragic events in August 2008 in South Ossetia when Georgia attacked it. That entailed Russia's peacemaking operation in the region. Afterwards, Moscow recognized independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia's allies Nicaragua and Venezuela followed the suit, as did a number of small Pacific island states.
