Peru seizes 517 kg of cocaine bound for Belgium

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) Anti-narcotics officers seized 517 kg of cocaine hidden in a cargo of fish at a warehouse in northern Peru, police said Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

The drugs were found among 2,000 slabs of hake fish at a port warehouse in the city of Paita, some 972 km north of Lima, said Hector Loayza, head of the Anti-drug Unit of Peru's National Police(Dirandro).

The warehouse belongs to a company named Seafrost and the cargo was destined for Belgium, according to the official.

During the operation, officers arrested seven individuals linked to the criminal organization known as "Los cartoneros del norte" (the north cardboarders), which operated under the guise of fishing activities, said Loayza.

Seafrost has a record of shipping drugs to other countries, including two previous shipments of cocaine to Belgium, he said.

So far this year, the Pevuvian authorities have seized 47 tons of different drugs including cocaine, marijuana and heroine, according to data from Dirandro.
