Kuwait affirms adherence to protecting biodiversity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov 15 (KUNA) -- Chairman of Kuwait Environment Public Authority (EPA) Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah affirmed on Thursday that Kuwait's environmental policy is designed to conserve biodiversity and rationalize usage of its resources.
Sheikh Abdullah, who was addressing a seminar held on sidelines of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, said this strategy is implemented with enactment of legislations, laws, working out plans and building natural reserves, in addition to promoting environmental awareness among the society segments, particularly the youth upon which "we count for shouldering responsibilities, conserving the natural wealth and the resources for the next generations." Biological systems worldwide have been negatively affected with human activities namely transports, tourism and travel, said Sheikh Abdullah, who warned that one of the most hazards affecting biodiversity is creation of new and genetically modified species.
Kuwait joined the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (of the Convention on Biological Diversity) on June 11, 2017, with aim of stemming such hazards and due to the significance of the biosafety.
This protocol, he says, aims at safeguarding biodiversity in the face of prospected hazards, namely genetically modified creatures.
Currently at the national level, EPA is seeking to add new articles to the environment protection law (42/2014), covering the management of genetically altered species and imported resources, encouraging local production of plants and livestock.
Earlier at the COP convention venue, participants called for integrating biodiversity into the energy sector and other areas, namely energy and mining.
Conferees in their addresses to the conference underscored various challenges and problems in this realm, namely soil degradation, water contamination and salinity. (end) ms.rk
