(MENAFN- Asia Times) A Filipino migrant worker in Abu Dhabi who suffered from kidney failure has been saved by his wife, who donated one of her kidneys to him.
Homer Rapadas, 45, a staff nurse with SEHA ambulatory healthcare, suffered from a neurogenic bladder issue, which was congenital, and led to the failure of his kidneys.
Rapadas' illness was discovered by accident during a routine test in 2011 and was detected in its later stage, Gulf News reported.
Rapadas' kidneys functioned until last year. He had to be put on dialysis in January this year when his kidneys became completely damaged. At this point, Rapadas needed a kidney donor for a complete recovery.
Rapadas' wife Rowena volunteered to be his donor and underwent tests to see if she see if she was eligible. The tests showed that Rowena was a "match" and Rapadas was able to undergo a kidney transplant.
In September, Rapadas underwent two procedures – one to remove both of his kidneys and another to transplant Rowena's kidney. Since the procedure, Rapadas has recovered and returned to work.
