New Tehran mayor picked

(MENAFN) The Iranian capital of Tehran was announced to be having Pirouz Hanachi as its new mayor, as the City Council chosen.

Tehran City Council picked on Tuesday the deputy for urban development and architecture of Tehran Municipality for the position after he won 11 votes.

However, former minister of roads and urban development Abbas Akhoundi was on the verge of winning the favor of the council while claiming 10 votes.

The new mayor is to be the successor of Mohammad-Ali Afshani, who was forced to step down due to new law which prohibits retirees from assuming government posts.
