Amman, Nov. 5 (Petra) -- The Jordan News Agency (Petra) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) on Monday co-organized a workshop on foreign labor in Jordan, which sought to raise journalists' awareness of foreign labor rights and issues as well as the use of correct designations and terminology when it comes to covering human rights issues in the media.
Petra Director-General Muhammad al-Omari said the agency is committed to enhancing its staff's knowledge of human and foreign labor rights issues in addition to child labor, so that the media can play a greater role in finding solutions to labor-related problems.
He indicated that such knowledge must be used in the right frame so journalists can deliver professional, un-biased and objective coverage.
Al-Omari underlined the importance of maintaining constant cooperation between Petra and the ILO and said today's workshop is a one in a series of similar activities the agency will continue to hold targeting reporters and editors.
Eliza Marks, Technical Officer of the Regional Fair Migration Project in the Middle East (FAIRWAY), underscored the important role the media plays in highlighting foreign labor issues and said the workshop aims to deliver some facts on migrant labor and issues pertaining to exploitation.
The workshop also aimed at introducing general principles on human rights, international labor standards, providing guidance on how to deal with migrant workers in line with international standards, Marks added.
