(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Dr Juan Guillermo Arbelaez, Muscat Eye Laser Center's cornea and refractive surgeon and associate scientific director, presented his latest research in ophthalmology at the 36th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) held recently in Vienna, Austria.
The five-day ESCRS conference had a variety of symposia, poster sessions, instructional courses and workshops on the current trends in ophthalmology, and also included an exhibition on new technologies. The ESCRS promotes education and research in the field of the implant and refractive surgery and advances the study and practice of ophthalmology. With over 9,400 ophthalmologists from 130 countries worldwide, the Congress provides an exclusive opportunity for top ophthalmologists from the world to meet and discuss their recent breakthroughs.
At the congress, Dr Arbelaez presented papers on myopia correction, single step transepithelial PRK (TransPRK) with SmartPulse Technology and the combination of this procedure with XTRA (Accelerated Crosslinking) to strengthen the cornea, as well as the new asymmetric intra corneal ring segments (ICR Keraring AS). With this ground-breaking research, patients with Keratoconus are expected to enjoy a better quality of vision.

Recently, he was also invited to be part of the tenth Expert Meeting on the 'Surgical Management of Keratoconus Patients' in Vienna.
Dr Arbelaez, a pioneer in Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) Corneal Transplant in Oman, a surgery only some cornea surgeons worldwide are trained on, is also recognized for his high experience in cornea disease, keratoconus management and refractive surgery.
Dr Arbelaez is a highly experienced ophthalmologist and surgeon with specialisation in corneal disorders and refractive surgery. He graduated from Medical School in Colombia and specialised as an ophthalmologist at the prestigious Barraquer Clinic, founded by Jose Ignacio Barraquer, known as the founding father of refractive surgery. He specialised in Cornea and Refractive Surgery in the Cornea Foundation of America, US. As a member of several international societies and has participated as a speaker in International Meetings in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, he has published articles in renowned International Journals and is involved with ongoing research in Cornea and Refractive Surgery.
