(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Waleed Pharmacy and Stores held an event recently to showcase iBreastExam - a handheld device that enables health workers to identify non-palpable breast lumps within minutes.
Dr Wahid al Kharusi, president of Oman Cancer Association (OCA), told Muscat Daily that the device will help raise breast cancer awareness among young women and also aid early detection. 'I think the device is very important especially in a country like Oman. This will help a lot of women under the age of 40 to detect cancer early as mammograms are not recommended for those in this age category. The device can also store data, so that healthcare workers can refer them for further tests.' Waleed Pharmacy and Stores donated two devices to OCA at the event. The USP of the device is that it does not emit any radiation.
'And the best part is that we do not need doctors and nurses to use this device. We can train community people to use it. By doing so, we can save a lot of time spent in screening. OCA will be glad to work with the Ministry of Health to provide data from these devices,' Dr Kharusi added.
According to UE LifeSciences, the developer of iBreastExam, the availability of a small handheld device for breast cancer allows better examinations in all social groups. 'The device offers safe and quick pre-screening for cancer without any radiation or pain. We've been able to offer breast health check-ups to many women in India and Brazil. Our work has resulted in over 100 breast cancers being detected and helping women receive early treatment,' said Bhaumik Sanghvi, co-founder of UE LifeSciences.
He said late detection is the cause of early death in developing countries as breast cancer continues to be a global threat – the most common invasive cancer among women worldwide.
Dr Mahesh Karajgikar, CEO of Waleed Pharmacy and Stores, said, 'The device is going to play a major role in breast cancer awareness as it is the first-of-its-kind in Oman and will help those below the age of 40 in early cancer detection. UE LifeSciences is from the US and we are happy to be their local partner in Oman. The device will basically identify lumps in breasts without any radiation which is a major side effect of mammograms.'
