(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Police rescued an Emirati woman driver after the cruise control of her vehicle failed at 140kmph. The motorist was driving on Malaiha Road and going towards Sharjah.
Due to the malfunction, the woman couldn't slow down the vehicle nor stop it, thereby risking her own life and that of others.
Lt Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, duty officer at central operations room, said that the Emirati woman was driving at 140kmph when she realised that she could not reduce its speed. It was then that she panicked and called the police.
"Around 9.30am, we got the call and immediately dispatched ambulance and rescue staff to the site," Lt Al Suwaidi added.
The team reached the woman and cleared the traffic ahead of her speeding car. The patrols kept giving instructions to the woman on the phone and told her to use flashlights to alert other motorists of her critical situation. They also told her to fasten seat belt, use handbrake and stay calm.
At last, the woman steered her vehicle towards the right and it came to a screeching halt on the roadside. The woman escaped unhurt, and thanked the rescue team for their help which saved her life.
Lt Al Swaidi urged the motorists not to panic and act rationally when the cruise control system fails. "Just stay calm and move into the lane with the least traffic, then shift down gears and use handbrake shifting the gear lever to neutral. After this, use the brakes to slow the vehicle down and stop at a safe place."
