Amman, Oct. 22 (Petra) –– Prime Minister Omar Razzaz on Monday welcomed Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, to discuss the partnership between Jordan and the European Union (EU).

The Premier said Jordan valued the partnership and is keen on enhancing cooperation while it looks forward to further benefiting from the simplified Rules of Origin agreement to increase exports to European markets.

He highlighted the economic hardship facing the Kingdom and the impact of the regional political turmoil on it, praising EU support to address these challenges.

Jordan is stepping up efforts to boost the economy, increase growth and attract investment that offer more job opportunities, Razzaz added.

The discussions also tackled the funding shortfalls facing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and the need to support the agency to continue its relief, education and health services. Razzaz hailed EU support to the refugee agency.

During the meeting, the Premier reviewed mega projects that Jordan intends to carry out, including the Red-Dead Canal, a strategic regional water conveyance venture linking the Red Sea and the Dead Sea.

He said the Kingdom would largely depend on the project for water desalination, and added that it is vital to maintain the Dead Sea water levels.

The European official said that the EU considers Jordan a major partner, pledging that the bloc would continue support for the Kingdom. He also commended the country for hosting a large number of Syrian refugees.
