2018 Extreme Sailing Series: Oman Air skipper hopes to put in 'best performance'

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) With just two Acts remaining of the 2018 Extreme Sailing Series (ESS) and Oman Air in overall third place, its skipper Phil Robertson is heading into the penultimate Act in San Diego, US, starting on Thursday, with a calm and clear head.

'There's no pressure for us,' he said ahead of the Act. We just want to put in our best performance. We're in third at the moment so the pressure is all on the guys [Alinghi and SAP Extreme Sailing Team] in front of us.'

Alinghi leads the standings after five Acts with 57 points and SAP Extreme is next with 55. Oman Air is with 51 but is closely followed by INEOS Rebels UK with 46. Red Bull Sailing Team (41) and Team Mexico (35) complete the standings.

With the Californian sunshine beating down on their backs, the elite level sailors will be grafting hard for the Golden Coast Act trophy.

Oman Air will be hoping to carry forward its final-day performance at the last event in Cardiff, UK, when it won three of the last four races including the double-pointer final.

Besides Phil Robertson, Oman Air crew comprises Stewart Dodson, James Wierzbowski, Nasser al Mashari and Pete Greenhalgh.

Oman Air mainsail trimmer Greenhalgh, who is the most experienced sailor in the 2018 series said, 'We will be going there to win as many races as we can. We are really looking forward to it.'

Following four Act wins so far this year, Swiss-flagged Alinghi will be striving for its fifth victory over the international fleet that it has battled since the first Act in Muscat, Oman, in March.

The regulars on the circuit will be joined in San Diego by a local wildcard team.

The Series grand finale will be in Los Cabos, Mexico, from November 29- December 2.
