(MENAFN- Asia Times) The Philippine government has provided livelihood assistance to at least eight families of Filipino workers who died while working overseas.
Christelyn Caceres, acting director of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Soccsksargen in Mindanao, said the Filipino workers died due to illness or accidents, Philippine News Agency reported.
Caceres said the families of the Filipino workers were qualified to receive financial assistance worth 15,000 pesos (US$278) each under OWWA's Education and Livelihood Assistance Program.
The families also received assistance in setting up their own businesses and were given initial merchandise and necessary tools. The beneficiaries underwent a one-day training course on business enterprise development and management, which focuses on how to start a business and financial literacy.
'This is to ensure the sustainability of their chosen enterprises,' Caceres said.
The ELAP intends to support, strengthen and improve the lives of the families left behind by deceased overseas Filipino workers. Children were also eligible to get scholarship assistance.
