Doha: Qatar Charity (QC) and Nasser Bin Khaled Charitable Foundation (NBK Charity) have opened a bakery in Kaukaba, Lebanon to provide bread to thousands of Syrian refugee families.
The project will also create jobs to refugees which will help improve their living condition, said a release.
The opening ceremony was attended by Khalid Bin Nasser Bin Ahmed Al Thani, Hani Abu Zaynab, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Welfare Association (ISWA), Lebanon, Nasser Al Mughaseb, director of Relief and International Partnerships at Qatar Charity and Khalid Al Hadramy, donor relations officer at Qatar Charity.
The bakery, which was established at a cost of nearly QR2.4m, is a development project aimed at filling the gap in the field of food security by providing free bread daily to 1,000 Syrian displaced families (6,000 people) in the Hasbaya and Marjeyoun districts, in addition to employing 30 Syrian refugees. The bakery is seeking to hire more refugees in the future to increase production for 21,000 new Syrians in the Beqaa Governorate.
The bakery was established in Kaukaba, due to its strategic location at the entrance to the Arqoub region, where thousands of Syrian refugees live.
The establishment of this bakery came as a result of a tripartite partnership between Nasser Bin Khaled Charitable Foundation (NBK Charity), Human Appeal, a British charity, and Qatar Charity.
The funding for this project from Sheikh Nasser bin Ahmed bin Khalid Al Thani amounted to around QR1.2m, and Human Appeal contributed to the establishment of the bakery with an amount of about QR1m, while Qatar Charity implemented the project in cooperation with Islamic Welfare Association (ISWA), Lebanon.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sheikh Khalid bin Nasser bin Ahmed Al Thani said the project will help alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees, creating jobs for them and filling the gap in the field of food security. He also hoped that the bakery will actively work at the achievement of this goal for the benefit of Syrian refugees, and will seek to provide a decent living for them.
