(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Asr Ahmed Toson, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative of Sub-Regional Office for GCC states in Oman, has said that its regional ministerial meeting will be held in Lebanon from October 30 to November 1.
Addressing a press conference last week, Toson said that a delegation from all Arab countries including Oman will attend this meeting and present the achievements and challenges of countries and the challenges in relation to population and development issues. 'It is also important to highlight the efforts of UNFPA GCC being a sub-regional office to reach out to the government and national stakeholders ahead of the high-level ministerial meeting, through consultation meetings to provide the needed technical assistance required by the governments to prepare their own national presentations and interventions.'
The three-day conference will take place at ESCWA-UN House, Beirut, Lebanon.
Natalia Kanem, UNFPA executive director, as well as Mohamed Ali Alhakim, the executive secretary of ESCWA are scheduled to attend the conference. It is expected that the secretary general of the League of Arab States (LAS), Ahmed Aboul Gheit, will be attending as well.
The conference will serve to assess the progress and identify the gaps in the implementation of the 2013 Cairo Declaration across the Arab region, with a focus on the commitments made and the policies and programmes implemented in various population development areas. 'It will provide a peer learning platform for states to present their success stories and share their respective challenges. The discussion will be informed by a regional report synthesising inputs from Arab countries and highlighting major trends and development witnessed in the region since the last review in 2013,' Toson added.
