Beirut: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the American University of Beirut (AUB) through its Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) and Texas A & M University (TAMU) including Texas A & M University at Qatar.
The purpose of this MoU is to set forth increased collaboration, cooperation, and interaction between both institutions, covering research agreements under the water, food, energy, health framework, teaming agreements, nondisclosure agreements, visiting scientist agreements, and more.
This MoU comes in recognition of the mutual benefit there is in cooperation and the development of closer relationships between AUB and TAMU. It will assist in enhancing the learning experiences of students (undergraduate and graduate) and researchers, by offering access to expertise and facilities that both universities have.
Through this MoU, the two universities intend to integrate and complement their capabilities available for the creation of strategic plans in order to promote research partnerships with focus on food-water-energy nexus and energy conservation systems. They also plan to set up opportunities for student exchange; define projects and pursue collaboration in areas of interest to the institutions; as well as encourage collaboration and cooperation on projects involving faculty and researchers.
Dean of Texas A & M University at Qatar, Dr Cesar Malave expressed his delight at the new opportunities offered by such partnerships, explaining that Texas A & M University in Qatar teaches engineering leaders who have the technical and professional skills to lead change in Qatar to an economy based on Knowledge.
He stressed that providing students with opportunities is an essential component to building these leaders of engineers to get the diverse experiences in different countries and cultures interacting with cultural changes, pointing out that this partnership will open new doors for students to participate in transformational educational experiences and build the human capacity to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Dean of the College of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the American University of Beirut Dr. Rabi Muhtar commented: "Texas, the Middle East and North Africa share a lot of similarities with water, agriculture and energy systems, and the three geographical locations share their suffering from the pressures of urbanization and population growth.
"The University of Texas A & M and the American University of Beirut have great experience in the fields of agriculture, food, water, energy and health, as well as shared values of service and responsibility", adding that the MOU will provide a platform for cooperation in research and student mobility in mutually beneficial areas.
