Percentage of older persons in Egypt 6.7%, in 2018: CAPMAS


(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation (CAPMAS) stated that the number of older persons who are 60 years and over, reached 6.410 million in 2018, which represents 6.7% of total population.

The CAPMAS further stated that the 6.4 million is divided into 3.418 million males, and 2.992 million females.

The percentage of seniors is going to increase by 2031, reaching 11.5%, as forecasted by The CAPMAS.

'The number of families headed by an older persons are 4,542 million, representing 19.4% of total Egyptian families in 2017,' according to data from the general population, housing, and enterprise census.

In terms of the older persons' employment, the labour force survey in 2017 stated that the number of older persons employed reached 1.256 million in 2017, of which 54.1% are working in the agriculture and fishing sectors, 15.4% are working in wholesale and retail, and only 5.5% are working in transportation and storage.

With respect to marriage and divorce, 'the percentage of older person's marriage contracts reached 2.1% of total contracts, while the percentage of divorce reached 9.1 % of total contracts in 2017,' according to the marriage and divorce bulletin in 2017 published by the CAPMAS.

According to the 2017 mortality bulletin, the fatality rate for older persons has reached 62.6% of total deaths in 2017, of which 58% are males, and 68.3% are females.

This report was issued on the occasion of the international day of older persons (60 years and above). Notably, the United Nations has identified 1 October, as the annual date for the international day of older persons.
