Rajiv Gandhi's assassin's mother meets TN Governor, seeks son's release

The mother of AG Perarivalan, who's one of the seven assassins of Rajiv Gandhi, met Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday to seek her son's release.
"I met Governor Purohit at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai and presented a petition along with some material and am confident my demand will be accepted," Arputhammal, mother of Perarivalan alias Arivu said.

Details
The documents Arputhammal presented to the Governor included Judge KT Thomas's remarks of some "serious flaws" in the CBI investigation of the case and details about her son's behavior during his earlier parole and its extension.
In 2017, Thomas had reportedly written to then Congress President Sonia Gandhi, wife of Rajiv Gandhi, to show mercy towards her husband's killers and to remit their sentences.
AIADMK asked Governor to release life convicts in the case
Background
Separately, AIADMK government had asked the Governor to release all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, a move hailed by most political parties in TN, barring the Congress.
The convicts V Sriharan alias Murugan, T Suthanthiraraja alias Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran, and Nalini, were to be released under Article 161 of the Constitution (power of Governor to grant pardons).

Son's release
"The Governor was 'cordial' towards me and went through my petition and suggested some correction and changes required," said Arputhammal, according to Deccan Chronicle.
"I am confident he will soon accept the cabinet recommendation and approve my son's release. He will respect the Cabinet, Supreme Court," she added.
The Supreme Court had earlier asked Governor Purohit to consider the mercy petition of Perarivalan.
