(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State said Friday that Iran "will be held accountable" for attacks against American interests and that the US will not let Iran "get away with using a proxy force." In an interview with CNN, Pompeo stressed "we have told the Islamic Republic of Iran that using a proxy force to attack an American interest will not prevent us from responding against the prime actor." "That is, we will not let Iran get away with using a proxy force to attack an American interest; Iran will be held accountable for those incidents," he warned.
He stressed that Iran has been "confronting the world as the world's largest state sponsor of terror for quite some time. They have armed militias, the Lebanese Hezbollah, Makateeb Hezbollah, militias in Iraq; they're arming the Houthis in Yemen, launching missiles in the Gulf states." If Iran is "responsible for the arming and training of these militias, we're gonna go to the source," he remarked.
Pompeo will speak out next Tuesday against Iran's proliferation in an event hosted by the United Nations entitled " United Against Nuclear Iran" in New York. In addition, President Donald Trump said in a tweet that he will chair the UNSC on Iran next week. Meanwhile, Pompeo said in remarks today on "Advancing American Values" that after Trump withdrew from the "flawed" nuclear deal, "he implemented a new strategy to force a change in the Iranian regime's behavior."
