Overseas paddlers to compete in Oman clubs' table tennis meet for first time


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) In a first of its kind initiative, which is certain to help the domestic table tennis standard grow, the Oman Table Tennis Committee (OTTC) has allowed the domestic clubs to hire overseas professional players for the Oman Club Table Tennis Championships.

Buoyed by the move, seven of the eight participating clubs have hired a pro player each in the men's category ahead of the championships, which begins at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) from Thursday. The four-day event will conclude on Sunday.

The championships will feature men, youth and cadet categories for the clubs.

Seeb Club has hired Jordanian Zaid Yousef, who won the Salalah Festival International Table Tennis Championship in 2016, while runner-up to Yousef in the same event, Bahrain's Anwar Makki will be part of Al Nahda Club team. Rohan Joshi, a professional from the Indian city of Indore has signed up with Oman Club while Adnan Fawkharji from Syria will play for Ibri.

Ali Lasheen of Egypt has been drafted into the Saham team while another Egyptian, Ahmed Helmy, will be part of Dhofar Club.

Yemen's Omar al Kedes will play for Samail. Besides the seven clubs which have hired the pros, Salalah is the eight club in the fray.

The juniors' final round will be played between Saham, Dhofar, Al Ittifaq and Nizwa. The clubs made it into the final round after a qualification event held in July.

Saham, Al Ittifaq, Ibri and Nizwa will compete in the final round of the cadet team event.

Also the individual final of hopes (U12) category along with the title clash of youth event will be held during the championships.
