DOHA: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) won yesterday the confidence of members of the Asia Pacific Forum and will occupy four leading posts at the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions.
Members of their 23rd annual meeting forum, which concluded yesterday, voted Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee, Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri as Deputy Chairman of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions, secretary of the alliance, and member of its executive office. The members also voted Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari as member of the APF council.
The historic win for the NHRC reflects its status and contribution to humanitarian issues regionally and internationally. The Global Alliance is comprised of more than 110 national institutions from across the world. The alliance had refused many requests made by the blockading countries, including downgrading the NHRC's rating from A in a bid to undermine it.
The Asia Pacific Forum stressed their support of the NHRC and praised the rejection of the blockading countries' request. The forum's presidency said that the NHRC was an internationally recognized institution by the UN, as the national institution for human rights in Qatar. The APF is a coalition of 24 national human rights institutions from Asia.
