Qatari officials attend training seminar by US utility body

DOHA: Over 20 Qatari senior staff, managers and trainees from several government and private entities including the Ministry of Energy and Industry, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Qatar Electricity & Water Company, and Siraj Company, participated last Thursday in a training seminar organised by the US National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and supported by the US Department of Energy.

The seminar, conducted as a live webinar, was held under the headline 'Models for Regulating the Electricity Sector and Encouraging Renewable Energy Integration. It featured presentations by Diane Burman, Commissioner for the New York Public Service Commission, Jack Betkoski, Commissioner for the Connecticut Public Utilities Authority and President of NARUC, and Tom Stanton, Principal Researcher at the US National Regulatory Research Institute. Sheikh Mishal bin Jabor Al Thani, Director of Energy Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Industry, expressed pleasure at this development in bilateral cooperation, which is expected to contribute to broadening Qatari officials' understanding of US experience in this area. Sheikh Mishal expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the American presenters, and praised the efforts of the US Embassy in Doha to promote cooperation between the two countries.

The seminar featured a productive exchange between the US and Qatari participants and underscored the strong commitment of the United States and Qatar to continuing constructive cooperation in the field of energy. The United States commends Qatar's National Vision 2030 efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, and the efforts of public and private sector personnel to deliver high quality services to the residents of Qatar to raise standards of living in the country.

The US Department of Energy and Qatar's Ministry of Energy and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen and facilitate bilateral energy cooperation during the inaugural US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue held in January 2018 in Washington, DC.
