Oman- Municipality to put up signboards for 70 wadis in Muscat governorate

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Muscat Municipality will put signboards identifying nearly 70 wadis across all its wilayats. These wilayats include Muscat, Muttrah, Bausher, Seeb, Amerat and Quriyat.

Muscat governorate has nearly 70 wadis spread across all six wilayats. Each wadi has a name but many people are not aware of these names.

'Instead of the usual blue signboards we have decided to put up brown signboards with the names of wadis on it,' a source at the Muscat Municipality said.

Brown signboards are usually used for displaying tourist information. The white letters on brown background is internationally recognised as information for tourists and can often incorporate a symbol related to information of a destination. Since a lot of tourists throng the country, these boards will help them know the wadis while touring the city, the source said.

Some of the wadis that will get nameboards include Wadi Kabir, Wadi Adai, Wadi Hishayyah, Wadi al Lahlu, Wadi al Arruba, Wadi Azaiba, Wadi al Arsh and Wadi al Khurais, amongst others.

The source said that a lot of effort was put in while establishing the cities along the wadis. Wadis are riverbeds which are at times dry and have water only during rain. They ensure smooth flow of rainwater without flooding the city.

Naming these wadis will also help people recognise the places they are situated in.
Even if a person has forgotten the way number, they will be able to recall the name of a place. Numbers are difficult to remember but the same is not the case with names, the source said.

Some wadis are longer and others shorter in length. So, the wadis which are spread over a distance might see two to three signboards while others will probably have just one, the source said.
