(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) Colombo, Sept 10 - A group of police officers from the Sri Lanka Police Force have left for Beijing to study Mandarin in order to enhance their communication skills with Chinese tourists and nationals who are presently employed and visiting the island country, the Ceylon Today reported Monday.
A senior police official said that officers were selected from police stations across the island and the group was sent overseas as part of a larger general training for police officers.
The group, which left last Thursday will return back to Sri Lanka at the end of September.
The Police said that a knowledge of basic Mandarin could immensely help the local Police when dealing with Chinese nationals in the country.
Police added that a large number of Chinese nationals had also got involved in petty crime such as acting as touts in tourist hot spots, petty thefts and for violating visa regulations while in the country.
"The personnel attached to the Tourist Police could be called into assist officers at the local stations when they are dealing with Chinese nationals on whatever the case may be," the police said.
Officials added that with China also being an important market for Sri Lanka Tourism, the country was bracing for a large influx of up market Chinese visitors and therefore it was important that officials with the Tourist Police had a basic knowledge of Mandarin.
