Kuwait regrets recent events in Nicaragua

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (KUNA) -- Kuwait followed up, with profound concern, the deadly events in Nicaragua, the country's representative to the UN Mansour A. Al-Otaibi said Wednesday.
The State of Kuwait, shocked by the scale of violence, asserts the need to bring those responsible for the violence to justice, he said at a UN Security Council session on the situation in Nicaragua.
He noted that the Council is meeting against the backdrop of an absence of consensus on the issue before it.
Citing relevant parts of Chapter VI of the UN Charter, which allow the organ to take conflict prevention measures, he emphasized the critical role of regional and sub-regional organizations.
Expressing regret at the recent violence and casualties in Nicaragua, he called upon all parties concerned to adhere to all their international obligations, while emphasizing that the Council should put the interests of the Nicaraguan people at the forefront of its efforts.
Meanwhile, the Government of Nicaragua should work with all regional actors, including the Organization of American States (OAS), to overcome the current crisis, Ambassador Al-Otaibi pointed out.
He concluded by emphasizing the need to ensure that all established international legal principles are fully respected in the Council's consideration of the issue, especially the principles of the sovereignty and independence of States.
Several speakers emphasized that the Council's mandate is limited to threats to international peace and security, not domestic issues, while stressing the importance of the independence and national sovereignty of States.
In that context, they sounded the alarm over attempts by some States to manipulate the Council in pursuit of their own interventionist agendas. Other delegates stressed the Council's obligation to respond to early signs of conflict - such as the violence against protesters and the silencing of opposition leaders reported in Nicaragua - as a critical element of United Nations efforts to prevent conflict.
