(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): Afghan and French archeologists have begun a joint study of an ancient city called Ghoghola near the Buddhas in central Bamyan province.
The joint Afghan-French team, accompanied by 30 archeology students, has been doing their research about the history of Gholghola€™s city and its architecture over the past one week.
The Ghoghola, an area in ancient Sayedabad city, is located on a hill near the Buddha statues and is one of the eight ancient sites of the province.
Archaeologist Julio Bendezu-Sarmiento, head of the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan (DAFA), told Pajhwok Afghan News the aim of their research on Gholghola city was to know which kings had lived here and they belonged to which time.
He said the importance of the Gholghola city was that it attracted more visitors after the Buddha statues. He said their research would help attract more visitors from abroad.
Meanwhile, Bamyan acting information and culture director Ahmad Hussian Ahmad termed the research on the ancient city €˜as an importance step€™ and hoped the researchers would be able to reveal the city belonged to which civilization.
An engineer in the Archeology Department, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok that a French bone biologist was part of the research team.
