(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs has called on the Russian Federation 'to immediately and unconditionally release political prisoner, Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov.
He wrote this on his Facebook page.
'I call on Russia for immediate and unconditional release of unlawfully convicted Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov. His hunger strike lasting more than 90 days causes deep concerns for his health, he wrote.
Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia already called on the Russian Federation to free Sentsov on June 13.
As Ukrinform reported, Sentsov was detained by Russian security services in Crimea in May 2014.
He was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony in Russia for alleged "plotting acts of terrorism."
On May 14, 2018, he declared a hunger strike demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners of the Kremlin. On May 28, Sentsov agreed to supportive therapy.
About 70 Ukrainians are political prisoners in Russia and in the occupied Crimea. This list also includes Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony on fabricated charges of "espionage."
