Oman- MoTC starts fencing Batinah Expressway to prevent crossing of stray animals

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Stray camels crossing the roads has been a major cause of concern for commuters and residents along the Batinah Expressway. However, this is going to change with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) taking note of the situation and fencing the expressway on both sides.

The ministry stated, 'To enhance traffic safety, work continues on the installation of fence on both sides of Batinah Expressway. This is to prevent crossing of animals, including camels, from both sides of the road.'

In the beginning of July, Muscat Daily had reported on the concerns of people living in the area as road accidents due to stray camels left many injured.

On June 23, the expressway near Khabourah witnessed a huge accident involving a stray camel. Ten persons were injured in the accident.

Hamadan Rashid Marash al Hosni who owns a herd of camels in Khabourah's Wadi al Hawasna had said, 'Stray camels on Batinah Expressway specifically in the wilayat of Khabourah have caused major accidents.

'On June 23, a stray camel caused a huge car accident involving five vehicles late at night in Khabourah. Ten persons were injured. I wish people are aware of the hazards of camel crossing and put fluorescent reflective strips on them. This will help motorists see them from a distance,' said Hosni.

Moza al Hosni, a Municipal Council representative of Khabourah had urged MoTC to provide adequate facilities. While Ali al Qataiti, a member of the Shura Council from Khabourah, had urged the ministry to provide enough exits and lights on the expressway.

'However, it is also important that motorists and camel owners are careful on the road,' he had said.
