Head of Ukrainian parliament's foreign committee predicts discussion of Sentsov's liberation at meeting of Merkel and Putin


(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Hanna Hopko, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs,predicts that the issue of a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas and the release of Ukrainian political prisoners will be discussed during the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on August 18.

"The issue of peacekeepers in Donbas will be discussed. In particular, I think that, besides the telephone conversation of the ministers [German and Ukrainian foreign ministers], I very much hope that our president will talk to Merkel prior to her meeting with Putin in order to coordinate the positions and confirm once again that nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine can be done," Hopko said on the air of 112 Ukraine TV channel, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

In addition, she hopes that Germany and Russia will discuss the release of Ukrainian political prisoners on hunger strike, in particular Oleg Sentsov and Volodymyr Balukh.

As reported, German and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Heiko Maas and Pavlo Klimkin discussed the issues of a peacekeeping force in eastern Ukraine.

The German Federal Foreign Office notes that Germany will continue its efforts to find a solution to the Ukrainian conflict. At the moment, it is necessary to achieve a real and lasting ceasefire and progress in the political process.

On August 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a visit to Germany, during which he will hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The situation in Ukraine will be discussed.
