It's been 72 years since we got Independence from the oppressing British Raj. Today is the perfect day to remember the heroes who made this possible and watch patriotic movies.

While you must have watched movies based on our freedom struggle many times, this list is different.

Kaifi Azmi and Shama Zaidi's story about a Muslim businessman fighting a dilemma after partition was brought to life by director MS Sathyu.

The plot revolves around Salim Mirza, effortlessly played by Balraj Sahni, who can't decide to stay in India or leave for Pakistan like others.

A poignant take on the partition, this movie was India's entry to Oscars.


Bhagat Singh's journey in Manoj Kumar's style

There have been many re-tellings of the life of Bhagat Singh and his revolution, but an original stays an original.

In 'Shaheed' which released in 1965, Manoj Kumar played the role of Bhagat Singh, Prem Chopra of Sukhdev and Anant Marathe essayed Rajguru's role.

The ace actors carried the movie on their shoulders which is enough to give you goosebumps.


Shyam Benegal brings to life Ruskin Bond's novel
Junoon


Starring Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, and Naseeruddin Shah, 'Junoon' was helmed by Shyam Benegal and based on Ruskin Bond's novel 'A Flight of Pigeons'.

The movie explored the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny keeping its center on two pivotal characters- Kapoor and Shah.

While Kapoor is a reckless chieftain, Shah wants freedom, and both play an equally dangerous game.

Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se' released in 2010, brought the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 to spotlight.

It all started when students wished to play soccer but couldn't. So they plotted attacks on Britishers, and their parents had no clue about it.

Though this movie didn't perform well at box office, it showed how small fights mattered in the big battle for freedom.


Three INA soldiers and a trial that started a movement
Raag Desh


Tigmanshu Dhulia's 'Raag Desh' was centered around the famous Red Fort trial of three INA soldiers- Shah Nawaz Khan, Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon and Prem Sehgal.

These three brave hearts were accused of treason by the British government because they dared to pick arms against the rulers of their own motherland.

You should watch this movie to get a lesson on communal harmony and brotherhood.
