US thank Saudi Arabia for contributing to stability in Syria, Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke Monday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al-Saud to thank Saudi Arabia's support for "northeast Syria's urgent stabilization needs." State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement that Pompeo also thanked Saudi Arabia for "its engagement with the Iraqi government and its offer to help Iraq address its water and electricity shortages by sending desalination vessels and providing diesel for offline generators." Protests broke out recently across a number of provinces in Iraq calling for improving living conditions, providing jobs and demanding better services.
Furthermore, Nauert noted that Pompeo and the Crown Prince discussed their support for a ceasefire in Afghanistan over the coming Eid Al-Adha holiday and peace in Afghanistan more broadly.
They also reviewed the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths' work to resolve the conflict in Yemen and other topics of mutual interest.
Griffiths had invited the warring parties in Yemen to talks in Geneva in September aimed at ending the three-year conflict. (end) si.bs
