GCC deeply committed to peace in Yemen, says chief

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH, Aug 13 (KUNA) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) remains steadfast in its conviction that violence in war-torn Yemen needs to cease immediately, its secretary general Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani said on Monday.
The GCC is eager to assist the victims of the war in Yemen through a political roadmap the bloc had drawn up to help the country emerge from crisis, Al-Zayani said during high-level talks in the Saudi capital over political solutions to the three-year conflict.
He excoriated the armed Houthi movement for plunging Yemen into anarchy, leaving its people vulnerable and in dire need of foreign aid, citing recent UN-backed Yemen peace talks held in various locations, including Kuwait, in recent years. Al-Zayani went on to assure the UN's special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths of the GCC's support as he seeks to negotiate a political solution to the conflict.
Meanwhile, Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed bin Daghr said that the "National Dialogue Conference" represents a broad consensus over the most contentious issues, calling for a fresh round of talks in a bid to restore normalcy to his country.
The Saudi-led Arab Coalition's intervention and subsequent military action named "Operation Decisive Storm" was a response to the Houthi rebellion, he explained, saying it helped "save Yemen from a painful fate." The Yemeni prime minister pinpointed the GCC initiative and the "National Dialogue Conference" as attempted exit strategies for the destructive war and ensuing conflict in the country.
Diplomats representing 19 nations, in addition to international organizations, all of whom are proponents of a political solution to the conflict in Yemen, have come together for talks over a peaceful transition of power in Yemen. (end) mdm.nam
