Envoy gives commendation awards to Japanese, Omani citizens


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- H E Mitsugu Saito, Ambassador of Japan to Oman, awarded the prestigious Japanese Ambassador's commendation to Omani and Japanese citizenson Sunday.

The commendation ceremony was held at the ambassador's residence. The awards were given to citizens of both countries in recognition of substantial contributions to promoting relations in various fields and enhancing understanding between Japan and Oman.

Those awarded were Dr Suad al Mudhaffar, founder and former principal of Azzan bin Qais International School, and two Japanese nationals Dr Fukuju Yamamoto, professor of Arid Land Research Center, Tottori University in Japan and Tomoo Shoji, freelance consultant and environment specialist.

'The commendation aims to acknowledge the efforts made by both Omanis and Japanese who played to enhance the relations between Japan and Oman. I am very happy to take this opportunity to highlight their activities and contribution,' H E Saito said.

H E Saito said that he was happy to note that Dr Suad contributed to the promotion of Omani education as a founder and former principal of the well-known Azzan bin Qais International School, where she introduced Japanese education methods to Omani students. 'Dr Suad has contributed to Japan-Oman relations through various kinds of cultural activities,' he said.

Dr Suad has played a significant role in the success of Oman-Japan Economic Collaboration Forum for SMEs, which was held in February this year on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of establishing Japan-Oman diplomatic relations.

Dr Yamamoto is a doctor of agriculture and a prominent Japanese researcher especially on Boswellia Sacra, a well-known frankincense tree, which is very famous in Oman.

'Through his research, Dr Yamamoto focused on the physiological mechanism of frankincense production in relation to the signal transduction substances and found an efficient method for frankincense production,' H E Saito said.

His achievement will be announced in the international symposium on frankincense, which will be held in Oman in October this year.

The third recipient, Shoji has been contributing to Japan-Oman relationship mainly through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) activities in Oman for the past two decades, especially through capacity building of Omani officials in the environmental protection administration.

'One of his prominent works in Oman is the Mangrove Preservation Project in Qurm area in Muscat,' he said.

The ambassador's commendation is awarded to individuals and groups in order to acknowledge their contribution to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries. The commendation also aims to promote the understanding of the activities of the recipients by Japanese public.
