DOHA: Al Rayyan yesterday scored a second-half equaliser to share points with Umm Salal in a thrilling round two clash under lights at Al Sadd Stadium.
Yannick Sagbo scored the first goal for Umm Salal but Al Rayyan captain Rodrigo Tabata found the net in the second (75) to help his side pick up a point.
In the 4th minute, Umm Salal's defender Mahmoud Al Mawas - after a short dribble - went for a long-range shot that sailed past the Al Rayyan goalpost.
Sagbo, the team's new skipper for the season, however opened the scoring for Umm Salal with a neat finish in the Al Rayyan box in the 16th minute.
Sagbo picked up a lob cross and then despite body marking by defenders by Mowafak Awad and Musa Haroon, the heavily-built forward slipped a low ball past keeper's right in the 16th minute.
It was Sagbo's second goal of the new season. The Ivory Coast star also scored against Al Sailiya last week.
In the 23rd minute, veteran striker Sebastian Soria hoodwinked his marker but his feeble left-footed drive was blocked by Umm Salal defender Adil Rhaili.
At the half-hour mark, Korean international Myongin Koh slipped a low cross for striker Tabata who was outrun by Rhaili who ended up blocking the move with a diving lunge at the ball.
Five minutes into the second half, Al Rayyan's Abdulrahman Al-Korbi launched a bullet from 40 yards but the ball narrowly missed the Umm Salal goalpost.
After a series of attacks, Al Rayyan pulled off a spectacular equaliser in the 75th minute. Soria provided a loopy cross to Tabata who headed home from close range. Al Mawas flicked the ball away but the header had clearly crossed the goal line.
The rebound was knocked into the net by substitute Khalfan Ibrahim.
Moments later Al Rayyan's Korean star Koh deflected a high ball toward the Umm Salal goal but the shot narrowly missed the target as Al Rayyan clearly looked the better side in the second half.
After two games, Umm Salal are still without a win in the new season while Al Rayyan have four points from two matches.
