DOHA: In wildlife photography, getting the perfect shot entails a great deal of patience, passion and daring traits that Qatari lensman Ali Al Shamsi undeniably possesses evident in photographs he took during his sojourn in Tanzania and Kenya.

The 49 stunning photographs on display at Al Shamsi's solo exhibition which opened on Wednesday at Gallery1 of Building 18 at Katara Cultural Village comprise some of the best images taken during his travels to Africa.

Titled 'African Safari, the exhibition took the breath away of visitors at the opening event for the wide variety of rarely seen moments in the life of predators and preys in the wild as well as their picturesque natural habitat.

Tree-climbing lions, a cheetah carrying its lifeless prey, a lioness tending her cubs and a vulture in its flight are some of the striking images captured on lens by the 26-year-old self-taught photographer.

'Taking these photos was a tricky task that needed a lot of patience. At times, I had to wait for several hours to snap one good photo, but at the end of the day I am so proud of the outcome of those efforts, Al Shamsi said.

His keen interest for wildlife and love for animals started at a tender age watching movies such as 'The Lion King which made the lion his favourite animal.

In 2010, he picked up his first camera to pursue his hobby which later turned into a passion he honed through the help of famous Kuwaiti photographer Majed Sultan who inspired him and taught him numerous techniques in using the camera.

Three years ago, he decided to take his love for photography to a higher level travelling to several countries in Africa to pursue wildlife photography that paid off since he contributed a number of his photos to National Geographic which he considers a turning point in his pursuit of his passion for the art.

He said he considered his visits to Africa a dream come true which he vowed to continue to further enhance his skills in the field to reach his goals.

It was a successful launch as local photography enthusiasts thronged the Youth Hobbies Centre on Wednesday to witness the show's opening led by Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara along with dignitaries and officials.

'It is such a beautiful exhibition. The photographer has made so much effort risking his life to come up with those fine photographs. We always welcome and support these talented and ambitious youths, said Dr. Sulaiti at the event.
