About 250 Ukrainian sailors arrested in Greece and Italy


(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The law enforcement agencies of Greece and Italy have arrested and are conducting investigation against 250 Ukrainian sailors, mainly for the transportation of illegal migrants.

State Secretary of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Andriy Zayats said this at a briefing on the protection of the rights of Ukrainians who were imprisoned, detained or arrested abroad, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reported.

"According to the law enforcement agencies of Greece and Italy, about 250 Ukrainian sailors are under investigation or serving a sentence, mainly for the transportation of illegal migrants," Zayats said.

At the same time, he said that in the last month the Ukrainian consuls returned home 33 sailors, who were in difficulty abroad for a long time.

He called the detention or conviction of Ukrainian citizens for the transportation of illegal migrants or smuggled cargo as one of the sensitive and resonant issues.

In this context, the State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry once again called upon the citizens of Ukraine to observe the basic rules, in particular the requirements of local legislation, and not to accept illegal job offers abroad.

As reported, as of June 30, over 10,000 Ukrainian citizens were arrested or convicted for different types of crimes in different countries of the world.
