Iraqi wins first prize in Katara Qur'an recitation competition


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Katara the Cultural Village has announced the winners of the second edition of Katara Prize for Qur'an Recitation contest.
The first five winners were selected by an expert panel of judges from about 100 contestants from across the globe, Katara said in a statement.
Iraqi reciter Sabah Khalaf won the first place, bagging a cash prize of QR500,000, while the second prize worth QR400,000 went to Mohamed Muftah Basheer from Libya. Mohamed Niyazi from Egypt bagged the third position, taking home QR300,000.
Younus Mohamed Mahra from Syria won the fourth prize worth QR200,000 and the fifth prize of QR100,000 went to Mohammed Azyawi from Morocco.
The contest was aired by Qatar Television since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, general manager of Katara, honoured the winners. He said the second edition of the competition had become a big success in terms of participation
as well as organisation.
He thanked Qatar Television for being an active partner in the contest.
Further, Dr al-Sulaiti said the Katara Prize for Qur'an Recitation had achieved its goal of promoting and discovering new talents in the learning and recitation of the Qur'an.
Katara will produce a CD containing full chapters of the Qur'an with recitations by
winners of the first five prizes.
