Jordan, Ireland jointly call for lifting Gaza siege

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, June 6 (KUNA) -- Jordan and Ireland on Wednesday called for lifting the protracted Israeli siege on Gaza Strip and allowing entry of necessities into the densely-populated enclave.
Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the common stance came at a meeting between Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi and his Irish counterpart, Simon Coveney, during which the two sides discussed various issues, namely the Palestinian and Syrian questions.
The two sides agreed on intensifying joint efforts to break the stalemate in the Middle East peace process, seek a settlement on the basis of the two states' solutions and international legitimacy resolutions.
The official statement quoted minister Al-Safadi as saying that Israel has transformed Gaza into a prison warning of eventual repercussions due to the stringent Israel measures against the Gazans.
Continuation of the occupation and lack of any prospect aggravate regional crises and conflicts, minister Al-Safadi said, praising Ireland's historic and principled stance in supporting legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, namely their right toward freedom and establishing their state.
Minister Al-Safadi noted the heavy burden borne by Jordan for hosting 1.3 million Syrian refugees, warning of dire consequences due to decline of support for the refugees. (end) mjb.rk
