Sudan, Ethiopia agree to iron out problems facing controversial dam


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KHARTOUM, May 2 (KUNA) -- Sudanese President Omar H. Al-Bashir and Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed agreed Wednesday to continue the tripartite dialogue with Egypt to remove the obstacles facing the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia.
Sudan is committed to the declaration of principles, previously with Egypt, and seeks to advance the tripartite talks on the water security of the three countries, President Al-Bashir said during his meeting with Dr. Abiy Ahmed who started a visit to Sudan earlier in the day.
Al-Bashir stressed the need cooperation by all sides to ensure that the dam, also known as the Millennium Dam, would not impact negatively on the interests of any party.
On his part, Dr. Abiy expressed desire to enhance cooperation with Sudan and Egypt to make the best possible use of the water resources.
The strategic partnership between Ethiopia and Sudan can play a pivotal role in maintaining security in the Horn of Africa region, he said.
During his two-day official visit to Sudan, Dr. Abiy is accompanied by a senior-level delegation, including the ministers of foreign affairs, defense, water resources and energy, and communications, as well as the governors of Benishangul, Amhara and Tigray regions on the borders with Sudan.
