Jordan- Intragastric balloon surgery conducted for overweight woman

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Apr 10 (Petra) –– A medical gastroenterology treatment team at the Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein Military Hospital Tuesday conducted an endoscopic intragastric balloon procedure for an overweight 31-year-old woman.

The procedure, the first of its kind at the hospital in Jerash and Ajloun run by the Royal Medical Services (RMS), is a "qualitative leap forward" in medical service extended to the residents of the two governorates, which the RMS seeks to achieve through the introduction of advanced medical methods and surgical interventions to all its hospitals, doctors said. Digestive diseases consultant, Col. Dr. Yusuf Al-Ajlouni, said that the patient, who weighed 96 kg, had checked with the gastrointestinal clinic in the hospital and said she wanted to perform the operation to lose weight by 22 kg to 74.

A patient who undergoes this process can lose between 15 and 35 kg within six months, and that the balloon is removed afterwards, he added.

Ajlouni added that the balloon procedure, which has been performed at the RMS since 2011, is non-surgical and is performed using the endoscopy in the digestive tract.

The ballon's results are "excellent", and it takes 10 minutes during which the patient does not feel hungry. It all depends on gradual weight loss without any complications, such as skin sagging, anemia or deficiency of some vitamins. It is a safe way to lose weight, he explained.
