Iraq brings PKK flags, symbols down in Sinjar

(MENAFN) As the Kurdish guerrillas are leaving the Yezidi town of Sinjar, On Sunday, Iraqi forces brought down the left Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) flags and symbols, Mayor Mahma Khalil said, as reported by Bas News.

This follows the PKK, seemingly under pressure of Baghdad and Ankara, decision of withdrawal from Sinjar.

Khalil said similar measures were taken in other Yezidi subdistricts, including Snune, Dougre, Douhola and Khansour.

He pointed out that the Iraqi government has asked them return to Sinjar as they are the legitimate and rightful administration of Sinjar. "However, we have made it clear that the region must be fully secured before we return," he noted.

The withdrawal of PKK forces comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently threatened to carry out a military attack and oust the PKK forces from Sinjar if the Iraqi government fails to expel them.
