Russia deems NATO accusation of Taliban aid as 'idle gossip'

(MENAFN) Russia has responded to NATO's top commander in Afghanistan allegations of supplying the Taliban with weapons, dismissing it as "idle gossip".

Speaking to the BBC, General John Nicholson accused Russia of investing efforts to weaken the US stance in Afghanistan as it supplies the militant group with financial aid and arms.

The commander said "we've had weapons brought to this headquarters and given to us by Afghan leaders and said this was given by the Russians to the Taliban."

Responding to the claim, the Russian embassy in Kabul stated "once again, we insist that such statements are absolutely baseless and appeal to officials not to talk nonsense."
