Arab FMs laud Kuwait's hosting of Iraq rebuilding conf., active UN role


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, March 7 (KUNA) -- Arab foreign ministers have commended the initiative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of Kuwait's hosting of the International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq (KICRI).

The ministers, at the conclusion of their 149th meeting held in Cairo Wednesday, said the success of KICRI showed the international community's realization of the huge suffering of Iraqi people.

They lauded the conference's success in raising about USD 30 billion in aid pledges from participating countries, private sector and civil society organizations in form of loans and credit facilities as well as investments.

The loans aim to improve living conditions, develop infrastructure and provide basic services in order to create a safe environment in the liberated areas in Iraq, they stated.

The council referred to Kuwait's contributions to the conference worth USD one billion in loans, in accordance with the mechanism of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, USD one billion in direct investments as well as USD 330 million denotations from the Kuwaiti charities.

The council welcomed efforts by Kuwait during its presidency of the United Nations Security Council in February to hold a session on the Middle East situation, including the Palestinian cause.

It also praised efforts by Kuwait ended up with holding a meeting on the prospects of a two-state solution for the Middle East conflict. (pick up previous) msh.asm.hm
